Best Buddies Indiana received funding to expand its school friendship program in Lake County elementary schools. Programming builds life changing one-on-one friendships between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities, offering social interactions while improving the quality of life and inclusion.

What is the Legacy Foundation?
Legacy Foundation is the community foundation for Lake County, Indiana. We are a 501(c)(3) qualified tax exempt organization that is an Indiana nonprofit corporation. We are governed by a board of directors of citizens from Lake County who love the community and assure our adherence to best practices. For over 30 years, Legacy Foundation has been empowering people, providing strategic leadership, and offering impactful support to serve the needs of all people in Lake County.

What is the Lilly Endowment Match Opportunity?
The Lilly Endowment private foundation is offering to grant Legacy Foundation $3,800,000 if we raise $1,900,000 from our community by June 30, 2025. This is a $2 for $1 match that we need your help to take full advantage of for the benefit of Lake County. All of the match and donations, totaling $5,700,000 will create an unrestricted permanent fund that will be used to strategically support the current and future needs of the citizens of Lake County as these needs emerge.
Why is an Unrestricted Endowment helpful?
The needs of Lake County citizens are different today than twenty or more years ago. And these needs will be different twenty or more years from now. The Legacy Foundation Fund created by your support will provide the much needed money to support the people and nonprofit organizations to address current and future needs. Our grantmaking for community priority needs is overseen by a board of directors and professional staff to assure funds are used for maximum impact.
What is the goal and deadline?
Our Goal is to raise $1,900,000 by June 30, 2025. Gifts can be pledged on or before June 30, 2025 and paid by December 31, 2027. We accept gifts of cash and assets such as stock.
Our Community Project & Program Partners
With Legacy Foundation receiving $5.625 Million dollars towards a matching grant, we are partnering with local organizations to support and provide a dollar-for-dollar match toward the following community projects and programs addressing health and human services, education, arts, and placemaking.
Building upon a commitment to service and the idea of the community as campus, the Living, Learning, and Serving Community (LLS) concept provides an integrated experience for students that includes learning community coursework, experiential learning, and volunteer opportunities with partner organizations. The activities within the LLS concept are designed to improve student engagement and retention while exposing students to volunteerism, providing students with experience needed to be successful after graduation, while meeting significant community needs.
Since opening in 1998, Dunes Learning Center has supported emerging conservation leaders through the Post-Graduate Environmental Education Fellowship program. Recent college graduates gain on-the-job experience as they lead education programs and explore career options with the National Park Service and beyond.

Marquette Greenway will expand the arts and culture of our heritage through natural trails, outdoor public art installations and educational events honoring all who settled along the shoreline.
Building off Legacy’s Neighborhood Spotlight initiative, Legacy plans on launching Community Heart & Soul in 2024. Through this national initiative, Legacy Foundation will work with 1-2 neighborhoods in Lake County to engage residents and develop a plan based on priorities identified by the community.
Ivy Tech Lake County is transforming its East Chicago campus to prepare its 11,500 students for future employment, as well as empowering the surrounding community. For 30 years, this building has served as the hub of educational opportunities. This renovation project will modernize classrooms, create a dedicated space for workforce training, and equip technology labs.
Lakeshore Public Media is developing a program that will promote high-quality early learning and child development to audiences across Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland through Lakeshore’s television, radio, and digital platforms. The core of the program will be a five-episode television series to premiere in 2024 that covers the following topics: Birth Navigation/Maternal Mental Health, Home Visiting & Early Intervention, Everyday Moments, Family/Social Relationships, and Positive & Negative Childhood Experiences. With PBS’ reach to more families with young children in low-income families than any other children’s TV network, this series will help educate families while generating support for local nonprofit organizations.
In 2023 Methodist Hospitals established the STAR Center, Sexual Trauma Awareness & Recovery Center, located in Methodist Hospitals’ Gary campus, to address the needs of sexual assault victims.
The Northwest Indiana Symphony Society is expanding the Summer Music Festival to include at least 1 additional community and provide funding for under resourced schools and students to attend and participate in the annual education concert.
For more than 20+ years, South Shore Arts has built the “everykid” arts enrichment program to ensure every child in Lake County has access to, and the opportunity to engage in, creative and artistic activities at no cost. “Everykid” is the umbrella program for all youth outreach programs including art and literacy workshops delivered at no cost to over 100 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade classrooms throughout Lake County. South Shore Arts plans to reach children from under resourced families who historically have not had the financial resources needed to access art classes and summer camps at SSA’s art centers in Munster and Hammond.
In partnership with Boys and Girls Club, Methodist Hospital, City of Gary, State of Indiana, and Crossroads YMCA, this transformational project will feature programs and services from each of the major partners: The Boys and Girls Club will offer high quality before and after school programming and educational support. Methodist Hospital will have a clinic to provide critical healthcare services, and the Crossroads YMCA will provide high quality childcare, health and wellness, chronic disease programs, family programs, youth classes, and a community hub to help support kids, adults, and families. Funds raised, along with matching funds, will go to the Crossroads YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club. This initiative will create spaces and deliver programs that focus on talent development, entrepreneurship, economic advancement, education, and overall health/wellness.

Legacy Foundation Women in Philanthropy has two membership levels.
- The annual membership for women under 40 years old is $500.
- The annual membership for women 40 years old and over is $1000.
