Purpose

N.L. Trusty History Graduate Award

Lance Trusty was a history professor at Purdue University Calumet and a respected colleague and friend to many.  He started teaching at the Hammond campus in 1964, where he remained for 39 years until his retirement in 2003. He was part of establishing the university’s graduate program in history, one of the first graduate programs at Purdue Calumet. As Professor Emeritus of History, his work was celebrated with a library archives and special collections exhibit named, “Trusting in History”.

Lance cared deeply about his students and the history of the region. He authored history books covering Munster, Hammond and the Calumet region, including one on the 50-year history of Purdue University Calumet.

Originally from Hampton, Virginia, Lance and his family became Munster residents. He is survived by two sons and his wife of 62 years, Jan, whom he met at the College of William and Mary. The fund established by Jan will honor his memory. The N.L. Trusty History Graduate Award will provide an annual grant to a graduate student in history at Purdue University Northwest.

Donations can be made in Lance’s memory online or by check. Checks should be mailed to Legacy Foundation at 370 E. 84th Drive, Suite 100, Merrillville, IN 46410.
