Purpose

Demetrius Tirrell Williford Memorial Scholarship

The Demetrius Tirrell Williford Scholarship Fund at Legacy Foundation supports high school students who live in Gary and who are graduating from a Gary High School. Students must have been accepted to attend, or currently attending, a vocational, technical, community college or a four-year university with a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) major, preference for engineering.

The Demetrius Tirrell Williford Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Demetrius Williford who died in 2016 from colorectal cancer at the age of 43.

Demetrius attended Gary’s West Side High School, graduating with honors in 1991. The National Honor Society member attended Purdue University Calumet and DeVry University. In 2000, Demetrius earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Electronics Engineering Technology.

This degree allowed Demetrius to quickly advance in his engineering career in quality control and management roles.  His career enabled him to travel throughout the United States and abroad, including Israel, North Africa, and China.

Though Demetrius relocated from Gary, he continued to have a love for the community he grew up in. Through his wife and two daughters, he is able to continue to support his community.
