Endowment Sustainability Program

Overview

The Endowment Sustainability Program of Legacy Foundation is designed to guide and support local not-for-profit organizations as they begin the process of building strong endowment and planned giving programs which will ultimately provide stable, long-term support for their critical work in the community. The program is designed to provide organizations with a cost effective training and coaching program in the areas of planned giving and endowment building.

In 2015, six organizations have been selected to participate:

Highland Community Foundation Hospice of the Calumet Area South Shore Arts

Lake County Endow Lake County Program

This training program will build the confidence of participants to sustain your organization’s mission by intentionally growing your endowment at Legacy Foundation. Designed for staff, board members and volunteers, the Endowment Building Toolkit equips nonprofit leaders to educate others about the mission, accomplishments and needs of their organizations.

The training focuses on three key areas:

  • Endowments
  • Your organization’s story and how to tell it
  • Role play, practice and Q&A sessions
You’ll receive valuable tools for endowment building, including marketing materials, sample letters and presentations, as well as demonstration and practice opportunities. This program is effective in helping nonprofits to build endowments through both current and legacy gifts.

Training

The toolkit is a proven model for success because:

  • The process has been tested and adopted by the national Council on Foundations
  • It achieves results through benchmarked goals and a defined timeline
  • Legacy Foundation staff support you along the way

Three Levels of Support

LEVEL 3 - $500

  • Endowment Team Building – Staff from Legacy Foundation works in consultation with the executive director or board chair to design and implement an overall endowment building strategy and set forth a plan for donor visits
  • Assistance in writing, editing and design of donor materials including: Case Statement, Donor Letter, Endowment FAQs
  • Introductory training session to help staff and board members understand endowments, planned giving and the Intergenerational Transfer of Wealth
  • Worksheets provided that will help identify organizational needs, endowment goal and prospective donors
  • Personal technical assistance and training by Legacy Foundation staff at 2 board meetings
  • Back-office management of gifts and acknowledgements
  • Templates for Donor outreach and marketing

LEVEL 2 - $300

  • Introductory training session to help staff and board members understand endowments, planned giving and the Intergenerational Transfer of Wealth
  • Worksheets provided that will help identify organizational needs, endowment goal and prospective donors
  • Personal technical assistance and training by Legacy Foundation staff at 2 board meetings
  • Back-office management of gifts and acknowledgements
  • Templates for Donor outreach and marketing

LEVEL 1 - FREE

  • Introductory training session to help staff and board members understand endowments, planned giving and the Intergenerational Transfer of Wealth

Training Sessions

The training sessions will be facilitated by experienced endowment and planned giving consultants engaged by Legacy Foundation

Session Topics

The sessions will be focused upon three major areas: external relationships (development and marketing), internal systems / organizational structure and leadership. Topics covered will include:

  • Endowment building / Planned Giving overview – it’s not fund raising
  • Infrastructure for endowment building – Equipping your organization to build endowment
  • Long range / strategic planning
  • Board / Committee leadership – recruiting and engaging the Boards and Committees
  • Donor development and solicitation – Working with existing and identifying new donors
  • Tools and Resources for your success
  • Marketing


Coaching

One of the most effective ways to help nonprofit staff and board members implement what they have learned after a training session is to provide follow up and technical assistance through coaching. The consultant can be a sounding board for ideas, review plans and materials, and guide the individuals in next steps.

Each organization will receive one individual coaching session between the training sessions. These are used to work directly with each organization and their leadership volunteers as they see fit. Also included is a one (1) hour peer group sessions between training sessions for staff to share successes and challenges. This is an open discussion that usually occurs right before or after the group session.
